At Youth 3D Engineering, students learn an introduction to engineering design graphics with Sketchbook and Creo Parametric, a state-of-the-art 3D CAD software used by major corporations.  Students will gain a high-tech skill and develop a knowledge of the professional software used with advanced mechanical engineering designs.  Develop employable life skills while making friends that share the same interest.

​​What was the inspiration to start Youth 3D Engineering program?

          Based on our statistical study over five years at a large university, approximately 9 out of 10 engineering college students did not have formal training in spatial thinking skills during their middle or high school years.  Approximately 10% of them received strong grades in the first year course of engineering graphics design.  The traditional curriculum in public grade schools is missing a strategic 3D CAD education that jump-starts an early college preparation.  Early training during the grade school years is proven to be beneficial in later years.  Our 3D CAD unique learning program can definitely solve that learning inefficiency when the student is already recognized in this field. The ability to think of complex objects in terms of their basic solid components and to identify relationships between various surfaces, edges and vertices is basic to creating both hand-drawn and computer-generated technical drawings.  By understanding how to represent objects accurately, students can communicate efficiently as part of a team, and increase their constructive visualization ability, or their ability to “think around corners."

What makes our class stand out from the competition?

           What sets us different from the competition is that we focus on comprehensive learning that correlates the digital properties with traditional physical properties.  We emphasize in strong technical hand sketching, basic mechanical engineering, project-based learning, industry 3D CAD advanced software, and 3D printing technology.  Students use digital calipers to analyze the individual shapes of a Lego blue racer and learn to correlate the digital and physical properties.  In the end, each student gets to configure the design for 3D printing model check.  3D printing comes with additional cost and 2-week waiting time (materials are High Definition acrylate, platinum, steel, gold, sterling silver, brass, bronze, aluminum, full color sandstone, castable wax, strong & flexible acrylic plastics, PLA, or even porcelain).  On occasions, we create quality interaction via screen sharing technology among the classmates and the instructor; thus allowing the opportunity for multiple students to participate with efficiency.  We offer live online classes for long-distance students via secured and reliable Cisco WebEx.

​         With animated projection principles, students learn to interpret multiple views and section views, then create 3D objects from simple shapes to advanced assembly models.  Upon completing about forty hours in this computer modeling program, students should have the basic understanding that the world around them is made up of wonderful complexity that can be created by adding and subtracting simple shapes and that they can take those mental tools into other academic areas of their college life.

Do we provide any equipment and learning materials?
          Our equipment comes with HP Elitebook touchscreen Wacom-enabled laptops with installed state-of-the-art CAD software: PTC Creo Parametric 3 (formerly Pro/E) and hand-sketching Autodesk Sketchbook software, Wacom stylus, 3D mouse, 3-button wireless mouse, step-by-step color workbooks, and digital calipers (measurement device).




Beginners sketch the projected geometry from 2D multi-views into a 3D isometric views and vice versa on touchscreen Wacom-enabled laptop.  They interpret visible, hidden & centerlines.  Autodesk Sketchbook is the preferred software for hand technical sketching.

Thinking in space is a spatial visualization technique that finds meaning in the shape, size, orientation, location, direction of objects, or the relative positions in space of multiple objects.   
Young students will gain an interpretation of 2D data sets in making 3D CAD models with state-of-the-art professional PTC Creo Parametric software.  Students create and control design features, lay out multi and isometric views, cross sections, and learn how to annotate dimensions.
